Did you Know?
Nutrition Facts labels are one of the few tools consumers have to understand what they’re really eating. In a food system filled with marketing claims, these labels provide objective data about calories, fat, sugar, sodium, and other nutrients that directly affect health.
Today, as rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease continue to rise, knowing what’s in your food has never been more critical. Accurate labels help people manage their diets, make informed choices, and prevent disease.
For parents, athletes, and anyone seeking healthier options, the Nutrition Facts panel is a gateway to transparency—but only when it’s truthful and scientifically verified.
Who generates most of the Nutrition Facts Labels?
Over 70% of nutrition facts labels in the United States are voluntary—meaning that brands and manufacturers create them internally, without any government supervision or independent verification.
Inaccurate Nutrition Labels Affect Public Health
When labels are wrong, consumers make choices based on false information.
This can lead to overeating, higher sugar and sodium intake, and greater risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Accurate labels protect public health and help honest brands compete fairly.
The 20% rule
Under current FDA guidelines, food manufacturers and brands are allowed up to a 20% margin of error between what’s printed on a Nutrition Facts label and what’s actually in the product.
That means a food claiming 100 calories could legally contain up to 120 calories—or 20% more sugar, fat, or sodium than stated.
Consumers really look at Nutrition Facts Labels?
According to recent data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), about 79% of U.S. adults aged 18+ reported that they use the Nutrition Facts label “sometimes,” “most of the time,” or “always” when deciding to buy a packaged food product.
Our Mission
The Honest Food Council is leading a national movement to bring truth and accountability back to America’s nutrition labels. We believe that consumers have the right to know exactly what’s in their food—and that honest brands deserve recognition for their integrity.
What We do
Through partnerships with accredited laboratories, universities, and food policy experts, we conduct scientific testing to verify the accuracy of nutrition facts panels. Products that meet our strict standards earn the Nutrition Facts Verified™ Seal—a mark of trust backed by laboratory data, not marketing claims.
Why It Matters
Studies show that many nutrition labels are self-reported by manufacturers and can deviate significantly from what’s actually in the product. This lack of oversight erodes consumer trust and harms responsible companies that play by the rules. The Honest Food Council exists to change that—by promoting transparency, accountability, and truth in food labeling.
Our Vision
We envision a future where every nutrition label in America is scientifically verified, empowering consumers to make informed choices and ensuring that honesty becomes the industry standard.
Because truth should never be optional.
